Easter Passion Plays
Several towns and cities hosted large-scale outdoor Passion performances.
The Southampton Passion: This was the first large scale contemporary production of the Passion in Southampton this year on 22nd April (Good Friday). It incorporated acting, music and song, and placed Jesus back at the very heart of Easter. The action will unfold as the crowds witness Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem, his last supper with the disciples, his arrest and crucifixion and then his glorious resurrection. Christ in the Centre - Leicester. The 2011 presentation was staged on Good Friday Easter April 22nd, with the first act again being staged at St Peter’s Square, HighCross, before a procession down High Street to Humberstone Gate for the finale, which depicts Christ’s passion, trial, crucifixion and resurrection. Christ in the Centre depicts the true story of Easter. Apart from the lead role, the entire cast is made up of local amateur actors. The event has been staged in the middle of Leicester every year since 2003. Read more about Christ in the Centre 2011
The Hornchurch Passion play has now been performed four times. At Easter 1995, Easter 2000, Easter 2006 and Easter 2011. It is hoped that it will continue at roughly five-yearly intervals thereafter. Hornchurch Passion is an outdoor event. The green in the centre of Hornchurch, adjacent to the Queens theatre, becomes Jerusalem for the week, populated with local people (Christians and non-Christians)...
Andover Passion. A representation of Christ's trial, crucifixion and resurrection, was performed in Andover High Street following the Andover Churches Together Service and Walk of Witness on Good Friday. The script for the Andover Passion was written and adapted by Peter Hutley MBE , who is well known for the Wintershall productions of Life of Christ. The group, backed by Andover Churches Together and Test Valley Borough Council, has drawn its members from throughout the Christian communities in Andover and district.
The Glasgow Passion: This is a new, ambitious and exciting production being staged right in the heart of Glasgow on 6th October 2011. It’ll bring the story of Jesus right up to date using a contemporary script and setting and aims to connect with a generation who are increasingly Biblically illiterate. Locals will act alongside more famous and established faces in the hugely anticipated drama, created by award winning Scottish playwright, Rob Drummond.
The Passion of Jesus in Trafalgar Square: On Good Friday this year, the passion was performed once again to a packed audience of thousands in Trafalgar Square, London. Performances were at 12 Noon and 3.15 p.m.
