Carols on the pitch
Footie fans will replace crowd chants with something slightly more tuneful when they attend the stadium for a bit of community Christmas cheer.
Carol services can be sedate affairs with candlelight, but not these events – the aim is to involve the whole community and be relevant, fun and enjoy the outdoor setting. Organisers have booked guests such as Linvoy Primus and Steve Legg.
In Bournemouth Andy Rimmer, the Chaplain for AFC Bournemouth (aka the Cherries), has organised the club’s community carols in the Seward stadium for the first time, in partnership with HOPE. The event will take place on the December 20th.
“The last few years we have had them indoors so it’s great to hold the celebration in the main stand this year. This carol service is a chance to share the Gospel in a completely unique environment and we want this event to have a real community feel as well as being attended by supporters of the club. My vision for the future is to see the whole main stand, which holds 3,000 people, packed out.”
“I’m officially connected with AFCB and I enjoy getting to know the lads and occasionally training with them. We have pre-match prayer which a few of them attend. Sport is a tremendous gift from God and it’s where people are.”
The Faith and Football organisation has teamed up with Portsmouth Football Club to help fans get into the festive spirit at Fratton Park on December 19th.
Both events involve local school choirs and salvation army bands. Carols in Football Stadiums are also being held in Aldershot Town and Shrewsbury Town.
