Serving Those Who Serve — Sharing Jesus in the Armed Forces

Discover how a former soldier now walks alongside serving personnel, sharing hope, faith and the life-changing message of Jesus through our WWII John’s Gospel.

Day by day, Paul Somerville — an Army Scripture Reader with SASRA (Soldiers’ & Aviators’ Scripture Readers Association) — shares faith and friendship with those serving behind the wire. Through the Naval and Military Bible Society, an extraordinary 20,000 copies of our WWII John’s Gospels were supplied to chaplains across the Forces, including SASRA. Paul has seen how these small books are opening doors to honest conversation, hope, and the life-changing story of Jesus.

How did you first feel called to this ministry?

I became a Christian as a 21-year-old soldier stationed in West Germany in the 1980s. The support I received from military chaplains and SASRA Scripture Readers was vital. Their prayers and encouragement helped me stay grounded through difficult moments.

When I left the Army, I felt called to give back — to help others experience the same message of hope that had sustained me.

What does your week typically look like on base?

Most days I’m out visiting soldiers — walking around camp, dropping into offices, offering a listening ear, and building relationships, often over a cup (or several cups!) of coffee. These informal moments often lead to deeper conversations about life, faith, and the hope we have in God.

What is SASRA’s mission in the Armed Forces?

All our Scripture Readers are Christians and former service personnel. We serve so that soldiers and airmen have the opportunity to hear the gospel during their time in uniform.

Alongside chaplains, we introduce people to a lived experience of Christian faith by being present with them — serving “behind the wire.”

What are some key spiritual needs among service personnel?

Many are searching for purpose, hope, and belonging — and for peace in the pressures of military life.

You recently led a Remembrance service — what stood out?

I was deeply humbled by the sacrifice of past generations. Their courage continues to inspire me and reminds me why this ministry matters so much.

How did you hear about the WWII Commemorative Gospel of John?

Our senior chaplain in Northern Ireland was planning a VE80 service and wanted to give attendees something meaningful. At the same time, our admin team received an invitation from Hope Together to order the commemorative Gospels. Perfect timing!

We ordered a large quantity and gave one to every attendee — from the Brigade Commander to the youngest private.

Why does this Gospel connect with servicemen and women?

After 30+ years as a Scripture Reader, I’ve found authenticity is key. The stories of WWII servicemen and women resonate deeply. Seeing how God worked in their lives encourages others to read John’s Gospel for themselves.

Have you seen any impact?

At the service, I explained the stories inside and that the same Gospel which spoke to past personnel was inside. Everyone took a copy.

As people left, many were already flicking through the pages. I’ve since seen copies on desks and tables, which often leads to conversations: “Have you read it yet?”

It’s not about preaching at people, but showing them something real — something that has shaped my life. When I share how I met Jesus as a young soldier, it grabs their attention and opens doors.

Why is Jesus’ message vital for those serving today?

Many soldiers carry deep emotional and mental burdens — from deployment or from daily life. Fear, anxiety, and trauma are common. While we point people to practical support, we also believe the gospel offers real hope and healing.

In hard moments, soldiers often ask, “Where is God in my pain?”
Psalm 34:18 reminds us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

How can we pray for you and SASRA?

Pray for our Scripture Readers as they open God’s Word with serving personnel, and for our HQ team as they lead and support the work.

Please also pray for the soldiers themselves — that God would stir their hearts and make them good soil.

Personally, I’d value prayer for safe travel to and from camps, and for more opportunities to share the gospel with those stationed in Northern Ireland.

What’s next — anything you’re excited about?

We’ve seen an increase in Scripture Readers and now have 21 serving across camps. We’re so grateful for people’s prayers and giving.

Sharing the gospel is a privilege, and personal one-to-one work is vital. God has entrusted us with a message of life and hope — even in the military.

Rescue the perishing,
Care for the dying;
Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave.
Weep o’er the erring one,
Lift up the fallen;
Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.
