Bible Sales Are Surging — and It’s a Sign of Something Bigger

Why a younger generation’s hunger for the Bible points to a pivotal moment for the Church in the UK.

Something really significant is happening.

Bible sales surged in 2025 — driven by a younger generation who are spiritually curious.

Sales increased by an astonishing 134%, the highest since records began. In the UK alone, Bible sales reached £6.3 million last year, up from £3.16 million in 2019. This was the headline story in The Guardian on 10th January, followed by Sky News and the Daily Mail, all reporting a new openness to God among Generation Z and Millennials.

These reports were based on another major poll that mirrored the findings of the Quiet Revival. Once again, a large survey of 10,000 people showed significant growth in belief in God and spiritual interest among younger generations. The poll was carried out by OnePoll, and the report written by Christopher Gasson — himself a Christian — who admitted he wasn’t expecting these results.

He said:
“I expected the data to confirm what has been assumed for a long time: Britain is steadily becoming a more atheist country. The results are the reverse of what I was expecting.”

In this poll, 64% of Gen Z identified as spiritual, compared with just 35% of Boomers. It’s those in their 40s and 50s who currently lead the way as atheists — a position the younger generations are now rejecting.

In Gasson’s Belief in Britain report, he found that 54% of the population now identify as Christian — a rise on the 2021 census figure, which was under 50%. We might ask, can this really be true? What’s striking is not just the change itself, but the speed of it. Faith has become more important to these generations in just the last five years.

This is a pivotal moment for the Church.

For decades, we have lived under a narrative of decline, and now we have to readjust our thinking and practice to live in this new, hopeful world of growth. The Church in the UK is not in decline — I repeat, the Church in the UK is not in decline. God is doing something new, and we are being invited to respond.

Which brings me back to the beginning of this blog: the Bible.

If this many young people want a Bible and are curious to explore faith, then let us, the Church, be ready for them. Let’s make the Bible visible, accessible, and easy to take away. Let’s meet people right at the moment they begin asking questions.

That is exactly why we run the Great Gospel Giveaway.

The Great Gospel Giveaway exists to help churches place Gospels into people’s hands across the UK — freely, generously, and in large numbers — so that anyone who wants to explore the life of Jesus can do so for themselves. It’s about creating simple, welcoming opportunities for people to pick up a Gospel without pressure, awkwardness, or cost.

Here at Hope Together, we have our eyewitness Gospels, designed with a younger generation in mind and ready to go. We believe a Gospel — the life of Jesus — is the perfect place to start. We want to make people’s journey to Jesus as easy as possible, and the Great Gospel Giveaway helps churches do exactly that.

So let’s begin by asking: how can we help every young adult and young person we know — or everyone our church might come into contact with — receive a Gospel?

Some of us are taking to the streets with simple Bible tables as part of the Great Gospel Giveaway.
Others are giving them to their friends and neighbours as they have chats about faith.
Some are going door to door, inviting whole communities to discover together.
Others are going into schools for assemblies.
Others are sharing them through food banks and toddler groups.
Some are placing them in cafés, community centres, and church porches.

Where could you give them out?

And why not grab a beautiful copy of our latest Gospel of John to share with someone you know — and be part of this hopeful new season God is unfolding.
